Wimbledon did everything but score on their return to Division One - and had to settle for a point at home to Tranmere.

Neal Ardley was the guilty party for Terry Burton's side, twice spurning golden chances and also putting a header against the crossbar.

Early in the game, teenager Patrick Agyemang bundled the ball past Tranmere's John Achterberg and squared the ball to Ardley, who somehow contrived to completely miss the ball with an open goal at his mercy.

The same combination almost broke the deadlock in the second half too but again Ardley's composure failed him at the vital moment and he ballooned the ball over the bar.

When Wimbledon did hit the target, they found Achterberg in determined mood, the visiting keeper holding on well when Herman Hriedarsson met an Ardley cross with a firm header.

Tranmere themselves hardly posed a threat in attack, with former Everton man Paul Rideout struggling with little service in attack.

Strike partner Wayne Allison did try a 20-yard curler but his effort failed to trouble Kelvin Davis, who later kept out a fine drive from Steve Yates.

Rovers became even more defensive when Sean Flynn kicked out at Mark Williams and received his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

But to their credit, they refused to buckle and Wimbledon's lack of a real cutting edge saw the game end goalless.
