Tough tackling right half Doug Munday was a stalwart of the Wimbledon side from 1948 until he left after a disagreement with Sydney Black in 1957. After playing alongside Ken Lister at first, he was part of the half back trio that included the older Wallis brothers that was familiar to all Wimbledon supporters in the early 1950s. After nine seasons and more than 300 games the 28 year old right half resigned from the club having been dropped from the team for the first game of the 1957-58 season. Chairman Sydney Black said he had not been willing to play with the reserves while the man himself said he had not agreed with a change in club policy. The reason was money - Black and his coach Henley had decided to pay their players in a bid to compete with the other Isthmian League clubs who had embraced 'shamaterism'. Munday immediately moved to Dulwich, a club that still believed in the amateur ideal, and with Hamlet he continued to be a regular visitor to Plough Lane.
