AFC Wimbledon were held to their 4th draw in 6 games at Stag Meadow on Tuesday evening.
The game was similar in many ways to the other drawn matches against Ramsgate, Boreham Wood and Walton & Hersham as the Dons failed to create or convert their chances into goals. Once again the opposition set their stall out to stop the Dons from playing without ever really showing any ambition to win the game. A poor pitch, which was very dry and bumpy, did not help either but whichever you look at it this will go down as 2 points dropped against a team who are not expected to be amongst the challengers for promotion to the Conference South.
The Dons started confidently, looking to build on Saturday's win over Folkestone Invicta, and in the opening minutes Roscoe Dsane broke free on the edge of the box. Unfortunately his run and cross bypassed the onrushing Fitzgerald. It was clear from quite early on that Slough were content to sit back and soak up the pressure, perhaps with the plan of catching Wimbledon on the break. The Dons passing game suffered on the surface as a number of balls played from the Wimbledon midfield failed to find their target and bounced harmlessly out of play.
Just before the ten minute mark the Dons created their first real opening when another good piece of play by Dsane saw him beat two players on the byline before crossing the ball into the six yard box for Steve Wales. Wales made a hash of the chance although the covering Slough defenders may well have blocked any goalbound effort.
The rest of the first half was pretty much a non-event as the Dons enjoyed the lions share of the possession without ever really looking likely to score. Slough Town's Gareth McCleary, rumoured to be one of Dave Anderson's summer targets, had a good run and shot whilst Dsane fired over the bar for the Dons.
At half time Dave Anderson brought on Paul Barnes for Byron Bubb in an attempt to liven up the Dons forward play. Barnes was involved almost immediately with a nod down to Fitzgerald who failed to make the best of the chance. A few minutes later and Fitzgerald created a good chance for himself, breaking free from his marker before shooting tamely at the Slough keeper.
Just before the hour mark Fitzgerald had another chance when he got on the end of cross from Haswell. Sadly his header flew over the bar as the Dons sensed that they might finally break through Slough's defence. Wes Daly then went close with a long range effort that went the wrong side of the post.
Richard Butler came on for Scott Fitzgerald with around 15 minutes to go and immediately put himself about, giving away a free kick for a shoulder charge within seconds of coming on. As the game entered the last 10 minutes Paul Barnes shot wide from inside the box as Slough began to defend deeper and deeper in an attempt to hold on for a point.
During stoppage time the Dons forced a series of corners and earned a free kick in a dangerous position but Rebels held out for the point they had played for whilst Dave Anderson and his men were left to contemplate on another frustrating evening at the office.
