There can be little positive to be taken from this abject performance, the form of Antony Howard and the impact of substitute Stephen Goddard the only bright spots.

The hundreds of Dons in attendance came to Blunts Wall Road hoping that Wimbledon could carry on the good form that had seen them beat Eastleigh on penalties and draw with league leaders Horsham. The home side set the pace from the off with wide players Lee Hodges and Chris Whelpdale in particular causing problems for the visitors. Joe Flack had Billericay's first shot of the day when he picked up a wayward Wes Daly pass in midfield. After running to the edge of the box his cross-cum-shot was palmed wide by Little.

The resulting corner led to the opening goal. Hodges's inswinging right-footed delivery was well directed but would have been gathered easily by the Dons keeper had he not been impeded by Blues defender Darren Blewitt. Unable to get off the ground or get his arms up the Dons keeper ended trying to head the ball away. As a result the ball sailed over him and into the net. Wimbledon were in generous mood again only a few minutes later. This time Sweeney was guilty of giving the ball away with a poor under-hit crossfield ball. Whelpdale picked the gift up this time, advancing and striking a shot from distance, but Little gathered easily.

After 20 minutes, Lee Kersey hit the ball forward and Scott Fitzgerald out-jumped his marker and flicked the ball on. Darlington picked the ball up and found Lewis Cook on the edge of the box. There's no doubt that goals change games and had Cook's left-footed shot hit the post and gone in, rather than out for Wimbledon players and fans alike.

Howard was on for the concussed Steve Butler but Wimbledon were struggling to create chances. While Billericay were hardly playing great football they looked by far the more likely to score. On 30 minutes, with the Dons missing challenges in midfield, the ball was fed wide to Whelpdale. The Billericay livewire advanced into the box unmarked and had all the time in the world to drive the ball low across Little and into the net. It was the last meaningful action of the first half.

The Dons needed to start the second half brightly but despite creating a couple of half chances for Scott Fitzgerald, never looked like getting on top and putting sustained pressure on the home side. Their best passing move of the game so far ended with Darlington's left-footed shot being knocked down by a defender's hand on the edge of the box but Cook could only send the resulting free-kick high and wide.

The introduction of Goddard saw Wimbledon look brighter up front with his presence in the air and his pace and ability out wide. But the game was put beyond doubt with 20 minutes to go when the referee awarded the home side a penalty. Michael Haswell was judged guilty of shirt pulling. However, more worrying for Wimbledon was the knee injury sustained by the Dons defender during the challenge. Leon Hunter despatched the penalty to put the game beyond the reach of the struggling visitors. Goddard continued to look the part up front but his efforts were in vain.

The travelling Dons had started to sing 'we really hate this ground' long before the end of the game. With two defeats, 4 sendings-off and a nasty injury last season and one dispiriting loss and Haswell's injury this season, it was a sentiment the players and coaching staff will agree with.
