Wimbledon handed out six of the best at Kent League Beckenham Town in this friendly, but the scoreline wasn’t the only pleasing aspect of an emphatic victory after the frustration shown by the management team at the performance the previous Saturday.

The Dons put the physical encounter at Sutton behind them as new striker Jack Midson bagged his first hat-trick for the club in six first-half minutes, Sammy Moore got a full 90 minutes under his belt, Brendan Kiernan continued to push for a more regular first-team place, and the four youngsters who sat on the bench to back up a full-strength starting line-up acquitted themselves well when introduced in the second half - midfielder Jake Rose and striker Zac Richards in particular.

This being pre-season, different formations were tried out. Lee Minshull returned in central defence alongside newly appointed captain Jamie Stuart, Sammy Moore got through plenty of work in midfield and, in keeping with the Kent theme, Kiernan and Luke Moore both looked lively as they offered considerable support to Midson up front. The hosts has cultivated an immaculate playing surface, and the showery weather from earlier in the day held off as Beckenham at first tried to offer resistance to the visiting attack. But when the breakthrough came, it proved devastating.

Luke Moore struck first: as the ball dropped in a central position, he volleyed into keeper Nicky Blue’s goal from close range after 11 minutes. A beautiful passing move straight from the training ground started down the left and cut the Beckenham defence open to tee up Midson’s first on 25 minutes. Three minutes later, his controlled lob over Blue made it 3-0, and the new forward laid claim to the match ball on 31 minutes, again finishing from close range after being supplied this time from the right.

Defender Nick Curran at times had to take drastic action to deal with Kiernan’s pace, and Luke Moore saw an effort bounce down off the crossbar before the break. Seb Brown was pretty much untroubled between the sticks against a forward line led by former Conference striker Carl Gibbs. Midson turned provider on the left for Rashid Yussuff to head a fifth on 58 minutes, and Sam Hatton made it 6-0 two minutes after the 90 were up.
