Victoria Petrova returned from her recent suspension to grab both goals, and earn another three points for the Dons Ladies.
Petrova (pictured) scored from two corners in the 50th and 90th minute, to put Wimbledon at the top of the LSER league, and from a display that fully earned the win.
The Dons have been working hard at their defensive organisation recently, and this was a game when they were put to the test, by a good Fulham side that always carries an attacking threat. The Dons new signing, former Aldershot captain Sian Houghton-North made her debut, and made an instant impact at Centre Back.
Although the visitors had a few decent chances, Fulham had most of the first half play. Goalkeeper Tylee had to undergo lengthy treatment after a goal mouth scramble in the 12th minute that very nearly saw the home side take the lead. Then shortly after, Fulham's captain Gemma Fraser, nearly scored, with Tylee making a good low down save, pushing the ball round the post. The Dons dealing with the attacking threat of Fulham and the strong wind, had to dig in deep. This was fully expected with the wind so strong, and in the face of the conditions, it was an impressive first half from the Dons. Defensively they were tight and they restricted Fulham's attacking options well.
Second half and the Dons utilised the conditions very well, taking the game to the home based Guildford side. Wimbledon used the pace of Bisson and Petrova well, and kept constant pressure on Fulham's defence. The break through finally came in the 50th minute, with Petrova reacting first to a poorly defended corner. Buoyed in confidence, from her opening goal, Petrova showed why Manager Lyons targeted her signature in the summer.
Bisson, Dons top scorer, also missed a number of chances to extend the lead, but was thwarted by a steadfast Fulham defence.
Don's number 8, Sargent, who was putting herself about physically, escaped with a lengthy warning late in the game, after a hard tackle on the home team's number 3. It was a tough game for Sargent, who at times was outnumbered in midfield, but rose to the challenge, and coped with the physical nature of Fulham.
On the 90th minute, Petrova grabbed her second of the game, securing the points, with a well-timed header from another well struck Suchley corner.
Although Fulham scored in the seventh minute of injury time, the Dons were very well organised, and carried through their instructions very well. They were full value for the win, defending well when they needed too, and utilised their attacking options at the right times.
Manager Lyons set his side out with a game plan in mind, and his team were very resolute and carried the instructions through perfectly.
I was extremely happy with all my players today. They coped with Fulham's attacking options, and the added pressure of the very strong wind. The pitch was very open and had slight slope, and the wind had a big effect on the game. We had to counter that in the first half, and did it very well. Second half we used it to our advantage, and coupled with a very good defensive display, fully deserved the win.
This victory has given us a lift, and instilled further confidence into the squad. We know we can match any team in this league, but it's a question of consistency, and carrying it through week after week. Next weekend we have another tough game at home to Carshalton, and we go into the game with even more confidence and belief.
