More than 2,000 spectators at Plough Lane (Festival of Britain match on Saturday saw Dons defeat a strong Middlesex Wanderers side.

Wimbledon took the lead after 5 minuted through D Clarke, who nipped in to intercept a pass back to the goalkeeper by Brown, and shot home.

After 15 minutes Brown made amends for his earlier slip by passing to Kelleher, who passed to Phipps. who scored with a first-time shot.

In the 35th minute the Dons regained the lead when Stannard did one of his inimitable solo runs, selling the dummy twice, and shooting past the advancing Freeman, Just on half-time Phipps netted for the Wanderers but was adjudged offside.

Ten minutes after resumption Phipps equalised for the Wanderers after Clarke had missed two good chances at the other end. Pacey had a chance to give his side the lead but shot straight at Hornett, who saved well. Jennings intercepted a pass from Pacey, send through to Stannard, whose shot was partially saved by Freeman, only for D Clarke to score at the second attenpt.

Another fine movement, again started by Jennings, saw Stannard pass to Clarke, and that player sent in a fine hook shot, only for Freeman to bring off a great save, but the ball went to Cammell, who made no mistake. Hornett came out and dived at the feet of Phipps to save a certain goal,. Then Pacey shot just over from 20 yards. Phipps completed his hat-trick with a good header from a glorious centre by Smith.

Five minuted from the end Gauntlett scored for the Dons with a first-time shot. Then in the concluding stages Cammell finished the scoring by running in to shoot home after Freeman had knocked out a shot by Gauntlett.
