AFC Wimbledon became the first team to reach the quarter-finals of the Vertu Trophy as they knocked out West Ham U21s at Plough Lane.

The Irons went into the game as the only remaining U21 side in the competition but were behind inside three minutes after some pinball in their own box following a Dons corner, with Alistair Smith applying the finish.

Callum Maycock doubled the lead for the Wombles as he followed in after West Ham keeper Finlay Herrick had saved from Omar Bugiel, putting the hosts two up at the break.

Marcus Browne added a third into the top corner soon after the restart before Josh Ajala and Lewis Orford scored as the visitors threatened a fightback.

But deep into added time Wimbledon hit the Hammers on the break with a two on one in their half, Herrick saving Antwoine Hackford's chipped attempt but unable to stop Myles Hippolyte from adding a fourth and securing the win for the League One side.
