Isthmian League

Corinthian-Casuals
?
1 - 2
Wimbledon
Ron Head (2)

Bill Magill, back from Ireland, was straight into the team in place of Digweed and Freddie Gauntlett was selected ahead of Birkbeck after good performances in the reserves, else it was an unchanged side that made the short journey to Chiswick in search of further Isthmian League points. Birkbeck, who had scored in the trial and then all four games so far, was never to pull on a Wimbledon shirt again.

Once again the Dons surrendered an early lead. On the defensive for the first ten minutes, Casuals countered down the right and Moss centred for Davies to head the ball down and drive past Haydock. Wimbledon had the perfect opportunity to draw level when a penalty was awarded for a handball by one of the home defenders, but Lemmer shot wide.

The best move of the game came immediately after the break and resulted in the equaliser. Green fed Stannard and after a one-two with Smith the latter passed to Head who scored. The assembled crowd now anticipated a glut of goals, but the home side repelled all attempts until the last kick of the game. Haydock’s only exercise was to run beyond the track that circled the pitch in order to collect the ball, as it appeared the Corinthians only tactic was to hoof the ball as hard as possible on every occasion it came near them. By the time the winner came many of the crowd had already left the ground, convinced the scoring was over, but a foul on Green, by no means the first of many during the course of the preceding ninety minutes, game Lemmer the chance to put in a free-kick and Head reached it first to head in with the final touch of the match.
