Jim Smith was preferred at outside-right in place of Norman Smith, otherwise it was the same team as the week before that took the field in search of further Isthmian League points, for what turned out to be one of the most remarkable games seen at Plough Lane in many years.

This time it was the Dons who were first out of the blocks, Green opening the scoring after four minutes after a nice passing move between Magill, Smith and Stannard allowed the latter to provide a decisive cross. Ten minutes later Stannard’s shot hit a defender and Green was again on hand to convert the rebound. Only four minutes more had passed when the Dons got their third, Smith heading Gauntlett’s corner onto the bar and Stannard latching onto the loose ball and giving the keeper no chance. Wycombe, without a point in their previous games, appeared dead and buried, but they pulled one back when Birdseye shook off three defenders before smashing the ball past Haydock and their spirits increased immeasurably. Stannard was unlucky to rattle the crossbar with a shot before the Wanderers further reduced the arrears through McCullum.

The game slowed down considerably after the break, although there was no shortage of incidents. After exciting goalmouth scrambles at either end Head gave the home team a two goal advantage, but this was only the precursor to an incredible end to the match. Haydock attempted to clear a Birdseye corner, but was only able to help it into the net. An injury to Green gave the visitors further impetus and with time running down they drew level through Dean. With only five minutes left it appeared Wycombe had secured an unlikely victory when Birdseye took advantage of a mis-kick by Fuller to complete his hat-trick, to the accompaniment of delirious shouts from the visiting supporters. But Wimbledon were not to be beaten and Smith centred for Stannard, who flicked the on and Head nodded it into the net.
