Henry was the eldest of eleven children born to Henry Charles and Caroline Annie. The family moved from Clapham to Wimbledon around 1902, although they moved back circa 1910, by which time Henry was a clerk in a builder's office and his brief spell at Wimbledon, a handful of first team games spread over three seasons, was over.
