Full Name: Joseph Harry Debley Date of Birth: Q4 1886 Place of Birth: Wimbledon Date of Death: Q1 1932 Place of Death: Kingston District Joseph Debley (1910/11 - 1911/12) The popular captain of the Club either side of the merger between Wimbledon St Andrew's and Wimbledon Corporation Employees. Somewhat small of statute, and slightly built, it was said his tactics weren't pretty to watch, but there was no question of their effectiveness. Cool, alert, resourceful and quick to recover, he appeared to be here, there and everywhere. Despite his size he had no fear, and many a bigger forward found himself robbed of the ball as he seemed to spring from nowhere. His keenness and enthusiasm for the game was infectious and he had the rare quality of being able to keep his team well in hand. Born in Wimbledon towards the end of 1886 to Henry and Eliza, he was brought up in Haydons Road. He started playing for All Saints' Church Lads' Brigade FC in 1899, where he gained a reputation as a forward with speed and resourcefulness. By fluke of fate he was forced to play a game at full back, and it was instantly apparent he'd found his real position. At the start of the 1906/07 season he joined Old Haydonians, spending four years there improving his abilities and perfecting his tactics, culminating in the team winning the Wimbledon & District League D2 East championship in 1909/10, beating Southfield Evening School in the divisional play-off between East and West. When financial difficulties forced Old Haydonians to disband at the end of that season Wimbledon Corporation Employees, who had finished third in the same division, sought him out and captured his signature for the 1910/11 campaign. With Debley at the back the Corporation Employees romped to the W&DL D2 East title, winning 16 of the 18 games played and scoring 61 against 18 conceeded. He married during the close season, and was captain as the newly merged Wimbledon Borough began their Southern Suburban League 1911/12 campaign, his final mention coming in the team selected for the final game of 1911. After the war he resumed playing, for Old Haydonians. 1910/11: Appearances: 0 - Substitute: 0 - Goals: 0 1911/12: Appearances: 0 - Substitute: 0 - Goals: 0 - Total: Appearances: 0 - Substitute: 0 - Goals: 0 Genealogical Research: These are research notes and may not relate to the player.
