Dulwich Hamlet
?
3 - 3
Wimbledon
Vic Bird, Freddie Gauntlett, Harry Stannard
After Extra Time. 2-2 after 90 minutes.

British Rail ran a special excursion for the Wimbledon fans travelling to Champion Hill to see an unchanged Dons take on Dulwich Hamlet in the second round of the Surrey Senior Cup.

Wimbledon were the first to attack and Harry Stannard went close with a rising shot that just cleared the bar, but Hamlet were the first to draw blood when their new centre-forward, Clarkson, gathered the ball on the run and flicked it past head to give them a sixth minute lead. The visitors pressed hard and Freddie Gauntlett had some nice shots cleverly saved by Freeman, but the other forwards appeared afraid to shoot. Brown took the ball away from Vic Bird’s feet and Jack Wallis missed a golden opportunity. When Vic Bird headed over Billy Laws corner it seemed the Dulwich goal had a charmed life. Freeman tried to assist by knocking out Jones during a scrimmage, but although Ron Head, Wllis and Gauntlett pressed hard down the exposed side they were unable to break through and half-time arrived with the home side still leading by the only goal.

Dulwich started the second-half still a man short, and the Dons pushed to capitalise, Bird hitting the crossbar right from the kick-off, and after play transferred ends a couple of times Bird equalised with a low shot that gave Freeman no chance. Jones then returned and within two minutes the Hamlet went ahead again through Connett. Ken Lister and Jock Woods were working overtime to halt the progress of the home side’s wingers and although the forwards continued to miss opportunities they penned their opponents back and a goal looked likely. It finally came a few minutes before full time, Gauntlett again giving Freeman no chance.

In the first period of extra time Bernard Head tangled with Jover and Arthur Maggs and Jock Woods did well to keep their charge intact until the referee stopped play to allow the custodian attention. The home took the lead soon after the teams had again swopped ends, Phebey heading in Jover’s corner, but in the closing minutes Stannard scored the best goal of the game to force a replay.
