For the replay against the Isthmian League leaders, who had particular designs on winning the Surrey Senior Cup this season, Jim Haydock returned in goal after a month out, but Jack Wallis was out with an injured shoulder, Frank Lemmer taking his position, and Billy Laws was unavoidably unavailable â€" getting married â€" giving Jim Smith another chance to provide the crosses. The Hamlet certainly started with the intention of gaining progress to the next round, and for the first half an hour it looked more likely to be when than if. Firstly Davies missed a sitter from twelve yards, then Haydock parried a shot from Phebey, but he was left out of position when the ball fell kindly for Jover. His shot flashed goal-wards, but Arthur Maggs somehow managed to clear off the line. At the other end Ron Head also missed a couple of good chances, and Harry Stannard headed over keeper Freeman only for Whitworth to turn the ball wide for a corner. The opener came after 32 minutes when Stannard, having a grand game, passed in Vic Bird and although Freeman looked to have his lob covered the ball dipped over him and into the net. Quicker on the ball and more accurate in passing the Dons gave Dulwich plenty to do, whereas the visitors relied on their speedy wingers Jover and Davies, but both were second best to Maggs and Jock Woods. |
