Harry Stannard, Jack Wallis and Doug Munday were released from County duty to allow them to play, so the Dons were at full strength for the replay. Hounslow, eventual Corinthian League winners, were also unchanged. It was soon evident that the home side were out to make up for their lack-lustre performance the previous weekend and an aggressive start brought four corners in the first four minutes, each ending in a goalmouth tussle. The visitors packed their goal and it wasn’t until the twenty-fifth minute that they managed a shot at goal. Stannard opened the scoring three minutes later from a Jim Smith centre, which stung Town into a brief rally leading to King shooting over, but the Dons were soon back on the attack and Wallis and Freddie Gauntlett got in each other’s way when either could have scored. Edghill, so solid in the first game, dropped a long cross from Doug Munday that went for a corner, and two minutes before the break another pass from the same player was headed out by Greenwood only as far as Stannard who ran in and headed the ball into the back of the net. |
