Surrey Senior Cup - 2nd Round

Redhill
?
2 - 1
Wimbledon
Charlie Smith

The same did that had performed so admirably the previous weekend made the short journey south to take on Athenian League Redhill in defence of the Surrey Senior Cup.

Playing against a strong wind in the first half the Dons insistence on regularly ballooning the ball into the air and often into touch proved their tactical ineptitude. Redhill showed more skill and kept the ball on the ground and as a result spend pretty much the entire first thirty-five minutes on the attack, culminating in a goal from Hopkins that gave them the lead at the interval.

There was more promise to Wimbledon’s play at the start of the second half and after Furness was injured in a tackle with Doug Munday seven minutes in they pressed hard for the equaliser, which came in the sixty-fifth minute when Munday passed down the centre for Charlie Smith to score. Patched up, Furness returned and with the numbers level Redhill soon regained the lead, Hopkins collecting a pass outside the penalty area and netting with a hard, low drive. In the last quarter of an hour it was the home side that looked more likely to score again, but there was no further goals and the Dons, perhaps with one eye on the following week’s Amateur Cup tie, made an inglorious exit.
