Harry Stannard (2)

Both teams had to rearrange the formation on because of a single absentee on each side. Charlie Smith, chosen at centre-forward for the Dons in place of now retired Ron Head, could not turn out and Harry Stannard moved to that position. Freddie Gauntlett was tried at the inside-right to partner Bob Seares and Harry Bull crossed over to outside-left. Clapton were hoping to include George Brown, their acquisition from Northern Ireland, in his first game for the team but he was absent and Vic Mays took his place. Thomas moved from inside-left to left-half, and E Carter came in as partner to Whyatt on the left wing.

With the wind at their backs the Dons dominated play. Stannard turned a centre from Seares into the net after three minutes and Seares scored a second goal at the end of twenty minutes, but five minutes later Solari reduced the deficit with a well timed header.

Clapton came more into the picture in the second half and when Horton put in a shot which beat Arthur Parsons the ball appeared to be over the line. One of the Dons’ defenders pulled it back with his hand but E Carter’s penalty kick was saved by Parsons. Clapton played with determination but without a doubt the Dons were the cleverer side and Stannard clinched the issue with a clever goal following a centre by Seares. Because of the failing light only 40 minutes half was played.
